Thanksgiving Update

Wow, got kinda behind on the old blog during this extended holiday weekend... here’s the basic run-down:

WEDNESDAY: Gusty winds and stinging rain in Chicago turn to a full-blown snowstorm in Indiana. The combination of making 135 miles of progress in 7 hours and seeing overzealous driver after overzealous driver strewn about the roadside enticed us to sample the hospitality of the Green Briar Motor Lodge in Elkhart, IN.

THURSDAY: Over the river and through the wood to grandmother’s house we go... we arrive in time for Thanksgiving dinner. Our main course this evening: TURDUCKEN. For the unenlightened, that’s an entire chicken shoved inside of an entire duck shoved inside an entire turkey. Clearly, the duck got the worst deal of the lot.

FRIDAY: In a father-and-son-bonding-experience-turned-tradition, my Dad and I travelled to Waldo, Ohio for the third year in a row to savor their legendary haute-cuisine: fried balony sandwiches. Having a hard time imagining this delectable delicacy? Picture this: a half-inch slab of processed meat-food, stacked on a hamburger bun with a healthy slice of white onion and a handful of sweet pickles. Heartburn included, free of charge. And the exciting discovery of the day -- Grandma’s hot water heater is on the fritz. So no hot showers for the next few days...

SATURDAY: My Great-Uncle Jim has his annual family get-together at the party barn with about a hundred of my aunts, uncles, and cousins. Always starts with a rousing round of skeet shooting -- and my cousins are always kind enough to invite me to participate. I am probably the most anti-gun person you will ever meet, but I must confess that when you do nail one of those clay pigeons absolutely dead-on, and PULVERIZE that sucker into a fine mist of clay dust, that DOES feel really dang GOOD. This was followed by the family poker game (lost my shirt). And while the usual buckshot-and-venison chili and homemade turtle stew was no where to be found this year, I manageed to make due with 3 chili cheese dogs and a half-dozen cans of beer.

SUNDAY: Drive home in less time than it took to get to the Green Briar Motor Lodge on Wednesday. Shower for the first time in 3 days. Very sad to leave (don't get me wrong -- we really had a good time!), but it’s good to be home too.

hum drum

I have to say I feel very guilty as I feel like there's nothing much to tell you about that's INTERESTING... I could tell you about my second guitar lesson (how thrilling) or my chiropractor's appointment (yep, back pain is always entertaining to read about) or the screwed-up proof for the BCM CD label (whoopee) or the killer master for the new BCM posters (boo-yah) that we're sending out today (oh just too funny) or the new plan for the BCM forum (how fascinating... NOT) or the new commission on the horizon (DON'T JINX IT!!!) or the several strange encounters I had yesterday (ummm... no) or my discussion with Newman on titles (ummm... still no) or my Thanksgiving plans (but then what will I talk about tomorrow?) or what I'm planning to have for lunch today...

no, that would be boring.

What an interesting new challenge -- I feel the need to entertain you, my devoted blog-reader. Now would be the perfect time to have a chimpanzee to a karate demonstration, but I did that yesterday. (bugger!)

This is not to say that I'm not busy, or that I'm not working on things, or that I don't have a to-do list that'd choke a goat -- it just means I have nothing to REPORT. That's even remotely interesting. At all. Today, at least.

Hoo boy, this IS awkward... today your time might be much better spent reading up on John Mackey's blog...

Vertigo Wedding

Headed to my friends' wedding in Monterey, CA. Kit Casey and Angela Cotta are finally tying the knot! They're both close friends of mine from the USC Film Scoring program, so there should be lots of other folks from the program there too -- kind of a mini-reunion! Angela and Kit are both movie buffs, so the wedding is at the famous chapel from the Hitchcock film, "Vertigo".

It should be very fun, and I'll try to blog from Northern California...

miscellaneous

We got the proofs back for the cover, insert, and tray card for the new BCM CD -- everything looks good and the cover looks AWESOME. We have GOT to make posters of this cover...

Played some oozey blues licks for another guy's game today...

Newman has joined the blog nation! Check out his notebook by clicking HERE

Speaking of blogs, I was reading Steve Vai's journal from a few years back, and was really knocked out by this one entrance he'd made. (a little background -- at the Chaos Theory performance in Duluth, there was a kid sitting close to the stage who was talking during the ENTIRE performance -- loud sections, soft sections, solos, whatever -- I could hear him rattling on, and unfortunately I allowed it to distract me from giving my best towards to the performance):

Date: September 23, 1986
Band: David Lee Roth
Where: Indianapolis, IN (Market Square Arena)

This guy in the front just kept yelling "you suck Vai", "you stink", "f*** you" etc. I just played the whole show to him with every bit of honestly I had. I forced every note from my heart into his and was playing great. At the end of the show, he gave me a thumbs up.

Ah, victory. I hate losing.

That, my friends, is very, very cool.

John Moulder

I had my first guitar lesson in 10 years today... hooked up with a heavyweight musician and masterful guitar player named John Moulder in hopes of really pushing my playing to the next level. I first heard him play at this great club called the Hot House with the Paul Wertico Trio, and I was totally knocked out by his effortless facility, his seemingly limitless harmonic vocabulary, and his powerful musical expression.

Our focus is going to be primarily in the jazz idiom, but he's taking a very personal, diagnostic approach to generating the work I need to do to progress as a player -- filling in the gaps in my education, and offering some new directions to help me develop ideas. I'm very excited that he's agreed to take me on as a student, and I'm really looking forward to our work together.

easy living

Just off from my first two-day weekend in MONTHS. Truly, I can't remember the last time I took two days off in a row. It was great. Rented a few movies:
- HIDALGO - very good
- VAN HELSING - totally stupid but very entertaining
- DOGVILLE - We couldn't make it past the first 15 minutes.
Nic and I also went for a massage and a float in an isolation chamber at SpaceTime Tanks. I hadn't been since April -- you can read about that experience by clicking HERE.

Other than that, it was pretty mellow. Practiced a little guitar, ate some healthy food, took the dog for longer-than-usual walks...

life in the fast lane

6:00 AM - Barenaked Ladies launch into "One Week" -- impossible to sleep through...
7:00 AM - I'm in my writing room -- off and running. Madly scrounging up sound effects for the game that's due TODAY. Alan is working on the final master of the BCM CD, and calls me every once in a while with a quick question... Ian has given the finished cover art to the graphic designer and I should see a full layout today...
12 noon - I'm finished with my sound effects and Alan is finished with the CD. We arrange for him to overnight one to me and one to Newman. I get a call from our signatory -- Little Richard is late on his AFTRA dues. This is a problem that I'm going to have to worry about later. Next step -- get ready for the voiceover session with Joan Rivers...
12:55 PM - I've managed to kick the other guy out of the studio (who's recording violinists from the Chicago Symphony Orchestra) and I furiously start dialing up the ISDN connection with New York City.
1:00 PM - The patch goes up without a catch, and I'm right on time, ready to record.
1:15 PM - Joan's not there...
1:30 PM - Joan's still not there... I've checked on the limo service I set up for her, everything seems kosher...
1:37 PM - Joan Rivers arrives with her full entourage and the flu. She's coughing, she's wheezing, she's blowing her nose. I'm more than a little concerned.
1:55 PM - We manage to make it through the session. Joan is a real trooper and has a great attitude about everything, and I've made careful notes to that I can cut around the influenza and end up with a successful voiceover.
2:15 PM - I have a chance to take a look at the art layout for the BCM CD. It's not finished and the direction has me concerned. Can't get the CD broker on the phone. Can't get Newman on the phone. Can't get Little Richard's agent on the phone. Settle in to start removing the flu from Joan River's voice...
3:30 PM - I'm able to give Ms. River's voice a clean bill of health. I call her agent to give him the good news and thank her for being such a good sport. Then I call Little Richard's agent to tell him if he doesn't call me back by 5 PM, tomorrow's session is off. Audio meeting!
4:30 PM - Meeting is done, and I've got a message from Little Richard's agent. Evidently Little Richard is not feeling very well (hmmm... must be going around!), so we need to cancel the session anyway. O-Kaaaaaaaaaay... call the studio in Nashville - cancel. Call the signatory - cancel. Call the limo service - cancel. Call Newman -- no luck. Call the broker -- no luck. Can't put this off any longer -- call the graphic designer.
5:15 PM - My head is spinning. I've just had a catastrophic meeting with the graphic designer that's ended with broken communication and an endorsement that we're NOT going to make the deadline. I can't believe this is happening. Call Newman -- no luck. No time to ponder all this...
5:25 PM - Patch our studio into Los Angeles via ISDN. Katey Sagal is ready and waiting for me. I switch into producer mode. She's very pleasant to work with and a total pro, and we're done in no time. As soon as we're finished-
5:45 PM - Call Newman -- no luck. Email for him to send me all the text -- I'm gonna punt. Immediately begin looking for another artist to finish the CD design. After a few tries, I've got one who's committed to having everything taken care of by tomorrow's deadline. I call a cab.
6:15 PM - I'm in a cab headed downtown. I have a packet of Cheez-it's that I've gotten from the vending machine as I was walking out the door (notice food wasn't mentioned previously in this blog...). Call Nicki for a reality check (notice calls to Nic weren't mentioned previously either!). I then grit my teeth and call the original graphic artist to tell him I'll be by his studio later tonight to pay for his time, pick up his work, and terminate his services. It's nothing personal, it's just business.
6:54 PM - Enough time to eat half the packet of cheez-its before my meeting.
10:00 PM - meeting is over, Nicki is waiting. She starts driving. I check my messages -- sure enough, the original designer has left a message. He's apologetic and irritated at the same time. It's not my style to give up on anyone, but this project has to be finished on time. I take a deep breath and call him back. I tell him I have three issues that we need to resolve... over the course of the next hour, we manage to get this project back on track (all the while Nicki is driving me around town to round up the materials for the other designer JUST IN CASE we can't reconcile this project!)
11:00 PM - I thank the replacement designer for offering his services, but tell him I've got to stick with my original hire. He's very understanding and cool about it.
11:15 PM - Nicki drops me off at the designer's studio. I thank her for shuttling me all over town and ask her if she agrees that in spite of how things have turned out, if it was all necessary. She agrees and she understands without me having to apologize. (Man, she's the best!)
11:16 PM - Designer and I sit down to resolve some of my concerns. We're working well together and our communication is excellent. He's open to my suggestions and I'm concious of leaving him plenty of freedom to develop his own ideas.
1:30 AM - I have no more concerns and trust him completely. I offer to leave him to finish his work, grateful that we've been able to come to such a mutually-beneficial common ground. He gives me a ride home (!) before heading back to his studio.
2:00 AM - I'm home, day is done. I decide to finish my packet of cheez-its and call it a night. Tomorrow's a big day...

The Penn is mightier than the Teller

.. OK, dorky title, I'll admit it. Nevertheless, I had a remote voiceover session with Penn Gillette today for the new Hollywood Squares game. I couldn't see him, so for all I know, Teller was standing right next to him the whole time.
VERY funny guy -- loads of energy, very professional as well as personable, and the fastest voiceover talent I've ever worked with. Total session time: five minutes and eighteen seconds, start to finish.

cover art

Saw the finished cover art today -- absolutely astounding.

Ian Simmons -- you're a mad genius.

in the barn...

Finished the final edits for Steve and Newm's new tracks... unsure whether I should give away what else is gonna be on this CD! But it all sounds really good -- the Tarleton State University tracks really came together well. And I even managed to finish with enough time left in the day to take Nic to The Green Zebra to celebrate the conclusion of this CD's grunt work.

"..there will be a new BCM CD -- oh yes, there WILL be a new BCM CD..."

Compassion and Joi

Spent the day completing the final editing and tweaking of the Ohio State University Symponic Winds performance of "Courage & Compassion" and WIND ENSEMBLE X's performance of "TranZendental Danse of Joi". It was a long day, but the time flew by.

It was really interesting to revisit the "C&C" recording -- I remember how excited I was to hear an ensemble really dig in and REALLY play the piece. It was also a tremendous relief -- after over a year of writing and polishing, I felt like I could finally let this piece go.

And the "TZDoJ" performance is AWESOME. We're going to use the live performance instead of the recording session, just because the energy is so fresh and alive! Yeah, there's some granola here and there, but it's worth the vibe. And wait till you hear the wailin' sax solo...

BCM bits

The final CD preparation is at full boil... in one corner -- artist Ian Simmons, furiously detailing his masterpiece for the cover... in another corner -- graphic designer/artist Shawn Smith, working out the preliminary layout for the booklet and back cover... Alan Bise anxiously awaits the final edits so he can master the album... meanwhile, I scramble about tying up loose ends like procuring a bar code # and tightening up edits for Steve and Newman... I still haven't heard WIND ENSEMBLE X's performance of "TranZendental Danse of Joi" yet, but it could be waiting for me at home this very minute...

We have about 8 days left before it goes to the plant.

Yin/Yang

Man, it's been a topsy-turvy day... and everything seemed to be in contrasting pairs.

Started with still being unsure of who our next president would be...

... and once the dust cleared from that, there was the voiceover sessions with Loni Anderson (very friendly and easy-to-work-with) and Billy Dee Williams (not as friendly...)

... and the only thing that put it all back into perspective was a short visit from my friends' Meghan and Macca's twins...

If

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you;
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or, being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or, being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise;

If you can dream - and not make dreams your master;
If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with triumph and disaster
And treat those two imposters just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with wornout tools;

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breath a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on";

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with kings - nor lose the common touch;
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you;
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run -
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And - which is more - you'll be a Man my son!

Rudyard Kipling
