bad... or badass?
Y'know how you sometimes find yourself with a flathead screwdriver in your hand, and you're jamming it in and out of a light socket to see if you can do it without getting electrocuted, and you know that if you keep this up, EVENTUALLY YOU ARE GOING TO GET ELECTROCUTED, but you keep jamming that screwdriver in there anyway, just to see what happens?
OK, maybe you can't relate to this example, but I've got enough metaphorically-melted screwdrivers in my metaphorical toolbox to prove that I definitely CAN relate to this kind of behavior. And I have the perfect non-metaphorical example:
The other day, I bid on a guitar on ebay. Now, I didn't want this guitar, I JUST WANTED TO SEE WHAT WOULD HAPPEN.
Sure enough, I won.

For the descriminating axe aficianado, this is a Jackson 7 string Randy Rhoads V with reverse headstock. In excellent condition. Muy metal.
Being the honorable fellow that I am, I'm doing the honorable thing -- I'm paying for it (fortunately, it's not that expensive). Once it arrives, I'll try it out, see how it sounds... but I really don't need another guitar...
or do I? Could you see me playing Chaos Theory with this axe, or is it too much? I can't decide...
So I put the question to you, folks: is this guitar over-the-top-outrageously-awesome, or is it just plain awful? Here's another picture of it:

Now I know I can count on some of the regulars to post their opinions, but this time, I want to hear from all you lurkers out there too -- Nic, M-dawg, Kull, E, Newm, Monkey -- let's hear it. Bad or badass?

i'll be the first to say it...i think it's badass.
I don't know SQUAT about guitars, but I agree with Sarah....badass. If it sounds good....KICK IT BRUTHA! With those shoes you have, I don't think you have to worry too much about "going over the top"!
Yeah, this guitar is so cool, it would almost convince me to learn to play, just so I could hang out on stage with this badass.
If only it had that body, but was a keytar.
Dude, That axe is BADASS! I may want to do Chaos Theory again, just to see the thing! Rock On, Brother!
I'm not a huge fan of flying v's, but as you may have noticed, I have trouble with collecting guitars. You never know when you'll need to play a cover of War Pigs. I say keep it! Maybe you could pull out the pickup's if they're decent.
This beast needs to be on stage with you. Just once. We will take a ton of pictures. Then he should go to a new home. Where someone will love him very much. Any takers? Barry???

holy headbangin haystack hair that guitar is just way too 80's glam!!! if you can find someone who will buy it, i'd sell it asap.
I dunno, Jim... Granted, it's badass, but maybe just as a showpiece. Then again, I'm in high school, and am held up to the standards of "cool". It is badass, though.
Looks a bit outdated. but still pretty Hard core.
badass.
don't listen to the the playa-hatas.
i wanna see this in the booth at midwest, plugged in, and rockin' out with your c*ck out. ok, maybe not so much that last part. just metaphorically. like the electrical outlet. wait, this is going in a bad direction.
to recap: badass.
screw The Nutcracker! i'm going to midwest if that's the plan!
Jim Go big or go home. Chaos Theory deserves the best of the Bad ass.........But it still won't help you at Guitar Hero.
Johnny C.
Damn, Jim, it's definitely badass. I don't know anything about guitars either... but definitely sweet.
my vote goes for badass - when my group plays Chaos Theory, I want that one. Seriously.
Dude, Randy Rhodes?!!! Now, that's awesome. Since I am a fan of the 80's glam/hair bands, I defintely say it's badass!!!

Jim, I was just looking closer at the picture and I noticed something odd. It looks like the bridge is a standard tailpiece(Gibson) style, but the strings extend beyond it? Am I seeing that right? What's going on there, it's hard to tell from the picture.
Hey Barry - yeah, it's a tune-o-matic bridge (like a Gibson), but instead of the strings going to a stop tailpiece (like a Gibson Les Paul), the strings feed through the body. This is supposed to give the instrument more sustain... judging from my other string-thru-body guitar (a Schecter 7 string), it seems to work pretty well...
I guess I was having a brain cramp and didn't realize this is a 7-string. Now that I'm awake and paying attention - KEEP IT!!!! It's always good to have a backup 7-string.
That mother is HOT. It would only be cooler if it had 2 necks...
I wasn't hiding or being tactfully silent or anything - I just know this is way beyond my range: as Jonathan can tell you, I was busy listening to the Go-Gos and going to ballet lessons at the time of it's birth, so I have no perception of its badassiness. Although actually I think I really liked purple (and unicorns) around then, so if that counts...
Next time we do Chaos Theory, bring this axe. We'll do fog, a light show, the whole nine yards.
Now, if you could just get the double-necked bass from "Spinal Tap" to use....
You need to put some skull knobs on that bad-larry!!
While you are at it check out this auction:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=019&item=290029613758&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1
Glad you got a chance to see Mike S. He is always an inspiration to me as well. And his band is always amazing. I'm gonna see him in October again.

such a tiny body, lol. I guess its cool though...if it sounds good it wouldnt hurt to keep it.
Dude, that's really badass! I love it ;)
its badass, but not good hardware
ok I would give you up to 1200€
for this thing!!
its great and I search for a sevenstring randy rhoads model...
please if you could tell me where I can find something like that...
for informations:luciferlightbringer666@web.de
please write me an mail!!!
its badass man!!!
kicks ass
KEEP IT. i'd like to have this baby..
sweet guitar definitely badass keep it to play some killer shreds!
dude, if you just got that with out even wanting i would keep it, theres no big deal about which guitar buy and stuff, you just HAVE it, so play it
This is not a biast opinion whatsoever, the people talking about it being too glam and all that bs dont know anything. that guitar if its real is an amazing guitar. i play one myself and its is along my top favs with my les paul. every guitar has its reason as well, dont just buy a guitar because it looks cool. do your research, do you know who rany rhodes is? the more you learn the more you wont fall in with the others that speak without knowing.
This guitar is waaayyyy to badass to throw out. It has immense pickups and an immense shape. Keep it it's awesome
i would have to say bad.
why you may ask?
because. if i think its bad maybe you'll sell it and i might have a chance to buy it :P
I'm amazed that this post still gets comments! I'd like to clear up a few things:
1. I knew what this guitar was when I bought it, but the point was I should've watched the auction rather then bid on it. I have three 7 string guitars - that's just a little extravagant for my lifestyle. And I was never going to throw it out - I still have it, and have even played one concert with it.
2. I know who Randy Rhoads is, as well as how to play many of his riffs and solos. I also know how to spell his name. I don't mind if you want to take shots at me, but have some respect for the dead, please.
3. If you're really interested in this guitar, make me an offer! jimbonney@aol.com
Thanks for posting!!!
The number 7 string will allow you to belt out some deep sounding stuff. I've had mine since 03 and it plays good, and stays in tune great!
