The games, the games

The MK team has spoken, and they want more orchestral music. Seeing as that's my favorite ensemble to write for, who am I to argue?!?

From the legends, I've been listening to a lot of Stravinsky and Shostakovich. I've also been checking out soundtracks by Elliot Goldenthal and John Powell -- I love those guys. Now it's time to check out the competition, see what works well and what doesn't. Right now, I'm checking out God of War -- it's totally got that epic, aggressive orchestral sound. If anyone has suggestions of other games that have great soundtracks, I'm all ears. Remember: I'm looking for orchestral stuff that will work in Mortal Kombat...

I'm not sure what exactly you are looking for, i've never played God of War, but you should take a look at Hitman 2 and other soundtracks written by Jasper Kyd. He has some more Empirical sounding tracks. I also have to say the Halo 2 soundtrack, particularly the main theme, is good quality music.

In terms of rock-your-socks-off orchestral game music, nothing for me can top "One-Winged Angel" from Final Fantasy VII. That is the most BADASS sound I've ever heard come out of an orchestra. If you look for it on iTunes, be sure to find the one that says "Orchestral Version", or else it might be the synth-y version - which is still good, but it doesn't have the live orchestra.

Of course, I'd be biased towards just about any Final Fantasy music, as I am an unabashed Nobuo Uematsu groupie...

You might look at the Metal Gear Solid 2 Sons of Liberty soundtrack by Harry Gregson-Williams. Great theme...not necessarily hard hitting, but it gives a little bit of an idea.

Yes, do check out Final Fantasy music. All of it is really good. There are some good CD's out with all of it orhcestrated for orchestra. Check this link out:

Final Fantasy CD's

Some cheesier than others, but all really good. AND, Nobuo Uematsu (composer of Final Fantasy music) teamed up with a group he calls The Black Mages to make a CD that has rock versions of all of the battle tunes from FF games. Here's a link to the CD with some audio clips:

I think you'll like them.
